Ear piercing has been a part of human culture ever since the earliest hunter-gatherer tribes. Another type of ear modification is ear gauging, wherein the person will permanently stretch their ear over a loop, causing a noticeable hole in the earlobe. This can be done on a minor scale, less than the diameter of a pencil. Medium scale gauged ears can barely fit a thumb through the hole in the lobe. Grotesquely exaggerated gauges have fit entire soda cans, or objects of a greater diameter.
